JCS senior accepted into UK School of Music

On Saturday, March 6th, JCS Senior Rickey Barnett was informed that he had been accepted into the University of Kentucky’s School of Music.
This began with an audition held at the University.
Here, Rickey was allowed a certain amount of time to warm-up his instrument (the bass clarinet).
Once warmed-up, he met with the Professor of Clarinets of the University and played through the piece of music he had been given previously to work on.
Once he performed this piece for the professor, he was given feedback and criticism to take into consideration.
The professor then informed undoubtedly nervous Rickey that he was accepted into the University of Kentucky’s School of Music.
When I asked Rickey what got him interested in the University of Kentucky, he told me that it had been a goal of his for a long time and that music has always been a passion of his.
Rickey plans to become a music teacher.
Everyone at JCS would like to congratulate Rickey on his acceptance and wish him the best of luck in his future!
Congratulations to JHS athletes Brittany Curtis and Pedro Sierra. They were recently named 55th District Players of the Year. They each also received a free combo meal from Wendy’s. This was sponsored by The Breathitt Advocate and Wendy’s.
Congratulations to JHS Sophomore Brittany Curtis. She was recently named to the 2010 KHSAA 14th Region Girl’s Basketball All-Tournament Team.
JHS physics class completes an experiment

They have been studying components of friction.
The class was divided into several groups of three or four and had to choose three different types of shoes to drag across a roof shingle to collect the data they needed.
After collecting all the data needed and putting it on the computer program (LoggerPro) to make graphs, the students analyzed the data and wrote it in the form of a lab report.
Physics student, Amanda Barnett said, “This is what I love about Physics. It’s fun to learn hands on!”
JCS 7th graders create mosaics

After Studying the Roman Empire and the art and architecture of that time period, seventh grade students in Mrs. Watkins’ class participated in a hands-on activity.
The students made mosaics. They chose the color scheme and form in which they would create their mosaic.
“This project was to help them understand the importance of mosaic art form in roman history,” said Mrs. Debbie Watkins.
“It was very interesting to learn the colors and process the Romans would use when creating a mosaic,” stated student Debbie Little.
The mosaics the students made are now beautifully displayed outside of Mrs. Watkins’ classroom.
